A rinse, inspection and drying routine that avoids packing moisture into folds or a closed bag. Red recommends rinsing all kit and fully drying before storage. Check the instructions for your exact SUP model; guidance differs between makers.
Work through the practical choices
Remove detachable pieces if the maker instructs you to, then rinse away salt, sand and mud. Red specifically includes the board, bag, paddle, pump and leash in its rinse advice. Wipe gently around seams, handles, valve and fin box, where grit and water can collect. Avoid abrasive tools and cleaners unless the manufacturer recommends them.
Remove standing water with a clean towel and let both sides air in a sheltered, ventilated place. Reposition the board to expose the underside, folds and deck pad. Dry bags and accessories separately with pockets open. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight as a shortcut. Before packing, feel folds and fittings for moisture and inspect for dirt or damage.

Check the awkward places before packing
Look around the valve recess, deck-pad edges, fin boxes and folded parts of the bag. A dry-looking top surface does not establish that the accessories or underside are ready for a closed cupboard. Put the pump, fin and bag on your preparation checklist rather than treating them as an afterthought.
If the weather changes before drying is complete, move to a sheltered place consistent with your maker’s instructions and leave packing until later. Do not treat a towel as a substitute for checking the remaining recesses.
