Plan shared kayak and paddleboard storage around distinct support needs, shape, access and maker instructions. A SUP rack product is not automatically suitable for a kayak hull. Check each rack’s stated compatibility and capacity, and each craft’s own care instructions.

Work through the practical choices

List every craft and record dimensions and weight from the manufacturers. Measure wall, floor and ceiling space plus the route needed to lift each item. Give frequently used equipment the easiest access. Avoid layouts where removing a kayak requires moving a heavy board or stepping over stored kit.

Choose supports designed for each hull or board type. Confirm load limits, spacing, mounting details and whether stacking is allowed; never assume a kayak cradle and SUP arm are interchangeable. Rinse and dry each craft according to its own manual. Store wet paddles and accessories separately until dry. Keep exits clear and inspect supports periodically for movement or damage.

Separate the compatibility checks

Record each craft separately: length, width, depth, weight and manufacturer support advice. A rack described as suitable for a kayak does not automatically accommodate a wide SUP. A combined load limit also does not tell you whether an individual arm or tier can take the craft assigned to it.

Sketch which craft goes on which support and how you will remove it without disturbing the other. Keep handles, fins, pedals and hatch fittings clear of contact points. Ask the rack maker to confirm mixed-craft use in writing before purchase.
