Plan overhead storage around ceiling structure, load capacity, safe lifting access and the hoist instructions. StoreYourBoard lists model-specific rack products; Thule’s load warning reinforces that stated system capacity and secure installation matter. Install only as that hoist maker directs.
Work through the practical choices
Measure the board and path to the ceiling. Account for lights, pipes, loft hatches, garage doors and vehicles below. Make sure the board can be raised without blocking an exit or creating a head-height hazard. A long board may need two people to guide it; plan the lift before choosing a position.
Read the exact hoist instructions for load limit, mounting points, hardware and rope routing. Find the structural joists or other specified supports; do not attach a loaded hoist only to plasterboard. If you cannot verify the ceiling structure, use a competent installer. Check straps, ropes and pulleys for wear before each lift, keep hands clear of pinch points and never stand under a suspended board.

Check the space through a full movement
An overhead rack or hoist occupies more than the board’s final resting position. Check the lifting path and the clearance needed for straps, ropes and support arms. Include the garage door’s entire opening movement, lights, pipes and anything parked underneath. A board that clears a closed door may obstruct an open one.
Before buying, ask the maker about your exact ceiling structure, mounting span and permitted use. Confirm how the load is secured when raised, how the mechanism is inspected, and where control ropes are kept. If those details are unavailable, do not infer them from a photograph.
