Plan a roof journey around vehicle roof limits, compatible carriers and secure tie-downs. Thule says board plus roof rack must remain within the vehicle’s stated roof weight and long loads need secure tie-downs. Use the vehicle and carrier manuals for their own limits.
Work through the practical choices
Read the vehicle handbook for the maximum roof load and the carrier instructions for fitting. Include the weight of bars, carrier, board and other roof cargo in the calculation. Confirm compatibility with the vehicle and bar system. Fit the carrier exactly as directed and use specified hardware and torque settings.
Secure the board using the carrier’s designated straps and tie-down points. Thule guidance says long loads including paddleboards need securing to the rack and front of the vehicle. Do not substitute elastic bungees. Remove loose parts if the carrier manual says to. Check the load after fitting, after a short distance and at suitable intervals; tighten only as directed. Obey UK road rules and the carrier’s limits.

Check the whole carrying system
The vehicle roof, feet, crossbars and board carrier are separate components with their own limits and fitting instructions. Record the exact part numbers and check the manuals that apply to your car. A carrier’s stated load does not override the vehicle roof limit, and a board bag does not replace the required securing system.
Measure the loaded height before approaching a height barrier. After unloading, inspect the board and carrying equipment before putting them into storage. If the board maker does not permit inflated roof transport, follow its alternative method rather than copying another paddler’s setup.
